My Journey in Custom Sign-Making and Beyond
The Beginning: Bass Lake Adventures
In 1974, at the age of twelve, I relocated to Bass Lake, California. That summer marked a pivotal moment in my life when I met Corky at a cabin above the Pines Resort. It was there that I carved my very first sign, sparking a lifelong passion for custom woodwork. My days were filled with carving signs, water skiing, snow skiing, swimming, and hiking—a perfect blend of adventure and creativity.
My First Sign Shop
By 1977, I had taken my hobby to the next level. I opened my first sign shop at the Sunnyside Swap Meet, working weekends and earning approximately $200 each weekend—a significant amount for a teenager. The experience taught me not only the art of sign-making but also the fundamentals of running a business.
Knott’s Berry Farm: A Career Milestone
In 1979, I joined Knott’s Berry Farm as a crafter, setting up my shop next to the iconic bottle house. My work caught the attention of Knott’s management, who were so impressed that they purchased the business from Corky and built a dedicated shop in its current state. I stayed at Knott’s for two years, refining my craft and learning how to meet the demands of a high-profile venue.
On the Road: Crafting Across America
In 1981, I embarked on a new journey, working at Marriott’s Great America in Santa Clara during the summer and Magic Mountain in the winter. This phase of my career allowed me to reach new audiences and expand my skills. By 1985, I had built a mobile sign shop, taking my craft to major fairs, including the Sacramento State Fair, Del Mar, Los Angeles, and Fresno.
Tech Meets Tradition
After years on the road, I settled in Oakhurst, California, and founded Sierra Net, a pop-up internet service provider. During this time, I gained expertise in computer construction, coding, and tech support. I even developed shopping cart software for various businesses, blending my traditional craftsmanship with modern technology.
Return to Knott’s Berry Farm
In 1998, Knott’s returned the business to Corky, and I rejoined the team. Starting from the bottom, I quickly rose through the ranks, surpassing the manager in both sales and carving skills within just two weeks. I took over as manager, bringing innovation and a renewed energy to the shop.
Looking Ahead
From a twelve-year-old carving signs at Bass Lake to managing a high-profile sign shop, my journey has been one of passion, resilience, and growth. Each chapter has shaped my skills and perspective, fueling a lifelong dedication to the art of custom sign-making.
