Knotty Pine can be white or yellow, and typically has visible knots throughout, as the name implies. Pine is more economical than redwood, but keep in mind redwood is typically going to last much longer than pine, especially outdoors. That being said, pine signs will look great and last years indoors, and with proper care, can last outdoors for years as well. But direct sunlight, temperature fluctuation and exposure to moisture will quickly age the appearance of the sign and, over time, the strength of it as well.
Redwood can have anywhere from a light to deep red color, and sometimes is two-toned with yellow. Knots are common but less so than pine. Other than the color, the biggest difference between the two is longevity. Redwood can last for decades,* even outdoors! The natural oils in redwood make it more resistant to pests like termites, and help protect it from damaging sun rays and inclement weather
* Not all signs will last decades, as wood is a natural product. The lifespan of all wood signs may vary.
Finish is the treatment that seals the wood to protect it. It is applied to the face and edges of your sign.
Interior finish is a high gloss treatment meant for signs going indoors. There is no charge for this service.
Exterior finish is used to treat signs going outdoors. This treatment will protect the sign from harmful UV rays, fluctuations in temperature and moisture. Signs receiving exterior finish may take an extra 1-2 days of processing time before the sign is ready to ship. Pricing for this service begins at $10, depending on the size of the sign.
Classic signs are made on 3/4 inch, planed-edge, farmed new-growth redwood or knotty pine boards.
Live Edge signs are made on 2 inch, reclaimed old-growth redwood slabs. They keep the tree’s natural edge. Sometimes they still have bark, otherwise they show the tree’s golden edge.
We provide hardware to hang your sign, and you can choose for us to install it for you. To mount your sign, you can drill holes through the notches in the carved letters before attaching your sign (this will hide your hardware from view). Pre-drill the holes to prevent the sign from cracking. Back mounting hardware, such as velcro command strips or sawtooth picture frame mounts, are easy to install. We do not provide the hardware for mounting a sign.
Keep it simple
Don’t over complicate things. The best looking signs are often the simplest. The most important thing is the text, what your sign will read. After you’ve figured that out, consider your artwork. Keep in mind, the more lettering, the less room for artwork, and vice versa.
Trust your gut
Too many options? Consider this message from someone who has been making personalized signs for decades. Go with your instincts. If you like something right away, you will likely enjoy it for a long time. If you are on the fence about something, especially when it comes to adding artwork or secondary text, leave it out. It is more than likely unnecessary and may overcrowd your sign, or distract from more important text and artwork. This is especially important if you are ordering a sign as a gift.
Trust your carver
We’ve been making signs for a long time. We want your sign to be personal; that’s what makes a Calico Wood Sign so special! But we also know that each sign has limits. We’ve all experienced having eyes bigger than our stomachs. Well ordering a custom sign can be that way sometimes, and there is a temptation to try to add too much. This almost never works out. Focus on what’s important and necessary for your sign, and leave the rest to us.

Shipping & Delivery
Once an order is received, the sign is usually made within 3-5 business days. Signs ship USPS Priority Mail, 1-3 day. You will receive a tracking number and notifications when your sign is shipped, out for delivery, and delivered. Sign ordered during the holiday season (Nov-Dec) typically will take extra time to ship. Keep this in mind and order holiday presents early!

Guarantee
We hope you love your sign as much as we love making them! We are very passionate about what we do and work hard to make the best hand-carved signs you can find. If your order arrives defective or damaged, if we made an error, or if for any reason you are unsatisfied with the craftsmanship, please let us know within 7 days of receiving your order, and we will do whatever we can to make it right!
We take great pride in our craftsmanship. Our work is 100% carved freehand, so no two signs will look exactly alike. Everyone has unique handwriting; the same goes for our hand-carving. Slight variations in lettering and artwork style will vary by carver.
Wood is a natural product that contains variations in color and grain and often contains knots, cracks and blemishes. These are to be expected in any wooden product, including our signs. We will check for large cracks that compromise the structural integrity of your sign before carving it. Our wood signs commonly have small cracks that do not effect the strength of the sign, knots and blemishes, as well as variations in color and grain from sample products, that add to their rustic look.
Please note that we are unable to offer refunds for claims received after 7 days of the delivery date of your order, but we will correct any errors on our part or remake unsatisfactory work for claims made within 30 days.
Returns
Your satisfaction is important to us. If for any reason you are unsatisfied with our craftsmanship or if your sign arrives broken or damaged, please let us know within 7 days of the delivery date of your order.
We want you to love your sign, and we will fix any problems that we can. If we think we can do better, made an error, or if the sign is defective or arrives damaged, we will remake your sign for you. If you are still unsatisfied with our work, we will provide a refund.
